Olerud Leads Mariners Past White Sox, 10-0

John Olerud hit a grand slam and a three-run homer Saturday night, setting a career high with seven RBIs to lead the Seattle Mariners to a 10-0 victory over the Chicago White Sox at Seattle.

Ryan Franklin (8-9) shut down Chicago’s streaking offense, yielding only three singles in seven innings. Rafael Soriano and Aaron Looper each pitched a hitless inning to finish Seattle’s major league-leading 14th shutout.

The West Division-leading Mariners increased their lead over Oakland to four games.

The White Sox had won five in a row and 13 of 14 -- averaging 10 runs, 15 hits and four home runs during the winning streak. They fell a game behind the Kansas City in the Central Division.

Kansas City 10, Tampa Bay 8 -- Brent Mayne hit an RBI single and an error let another run score on the play as the Royals rallied in the seventh inning at Kansas City.

The Royals stopped their four-game losing streak by overcoming Tampa Bay’s six-run seventh. The Devil Rays, who had won four in a row, led, 8-7, after a six-run seventh keyed by Julio Lugo’s two-run double.

Michael Tucker and Angel Berroa singled to start the bottom half and Desi Relaford sacrificed. Mayne followed with a single and center fielder Rocco Baldelli’s bobble let Berroa score the go-ahead run.

Baltimore 11, Boston 2 -- Luis Matos homered to cap a seven-run sixth inning at Baltimore as the Orioles dealt the Red Sox their fourth consecutive loss. Rodrigo Lopez (4-6) gave up two runs in six innings to help the Orioles win their eighth straight home game and improve to 11-5 since the All-Star break.

Boston, which fell 4 1/2 games behind the first-place New York Yankees in the East, has been outscored, 29-8, during the current skid.

Texas 9, Cleveland 7 -- At Arlington, Texas, Rafael Palmeiro hit a tiebreaking double and one of three homers as the Rangers won their fourth in a row. Alex Rodriguez homered for the third consecutive game and rookie Laynce Nix also connected for the Rangers, who increased their major league-leading total to 167 a night after tying a team record with seven homers.

Detroit 9, Minnesota 2 -- The Tigers, who had lost five in a row and 12 of 14, ended a 16-game losing streak to the Twins. Craig Monroe hit a three-run homer and Mike Maroth (6-15) yielded one run in 5 1/3 innings at Minneapolis.

Kansas City put Jose Lima (7-0), who has a strained groin, on the 15-day disabled list. To replace Lima, the Royals recalled left-hander Jimmy Gobble from double-A Wichita. He’ll start today in his major league debut.
