NFL Says Carson Still a Possibility
Contradicting a Times report that the NFL has all but eliminated the Carson site from stadium consideration, a league representative said Monday that the NFL has not given up on the possibility of building there.
“We are continuing to investigate Carson, as well as other potential sites in the Los Angeles area that would be suitable for a potential state-of-the-art stadium,” NFL spokesman Greg Aiello said.
According to several sources, the league has no plans to build on the toxic landfill in Carson; when the concept was suggested, the NFL did not know that developer GMS Realty did not own the rights to the site.
In May, NFL owners authorized Commissioner Paul Tagliabue to spend as much as $10 million to investigate the feasibility of the Carson site. That money has not been spent and, sources said, Tagliabue has no intention of spending it.
