A Compton businessman was sentenced to two years in federal prison this week after he was convicted of illegally dumping hazardous wastes in the desert in Riverside County.

Gary Barken, 34, owner of Barken’s Hard Chrome, was accused of transporting about 40 drums of chemical wastes to the desert, where they were dumped on the ground.

U.S. District Judge Stephen V. Wilson also fined Barken $25,000. The defendant previously paid $86,000 to clean up the contaminated area.
