A young woman and her prematurely born infant were both in critical condition and the baby’s father was wounded after they were ambushed with gunfire Thursday as they drove home from a grocery store, Los Angeles Police Det. Rudy Lemos said.

Amelia T. Ford, 26, seven months’ pregnant when she was shot, remained on life support Thursday afternoon, hours after surgeons at Martin Luther King/Drew Medical Center performed an emergency caesarean section to deliver her child. The baby, a boy, was in critical condition.

Ford and her partner, Quinn Taylor Jones, were “just a couple with no gang affiliation,” Lemos said. They were driving in the 4600 block of South Vermont at about 11:30 p.m. Wednesday when men standing near the intersection opened fire on their gray Oldsmobile Cutlass with an assault rifle.

Ford, in the passenger seat, was struck in the head, Jones in the torso. Wounded, he still managed to drive the car to safety, stopping several blocks away to summon help.

Police were seeking the gunmen.
