Ridership on Amtrak Could Break Record
Amtrak ridership in Southern California is on pace to set a record, with officials crediting the increase to fare discounts, high gasoline prices and vacationers’ desire to stay close to home after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.
Amtrak ridership on the Southern California coast rose 32.4% in July over the same month in 2002, said Sara Swain, an Amtrak spokeswoman in Oakland. Amtrak expects to reach a record 2 million passengers for the federal fiscal year that ends Sept. 30.
Passengers traveling on the Pacific Surfliner, the train running between San Diego and San Luis Obispo, soared to 211,913 last month on the nation’s second-busiest Amtrak corridor.
