Whale Harpooned as the U.S. Protests

Icelandic whalers harpooned their first minke whale in 14 years, the marine scientist in charge of the hunt said. The United States threatened to consider a trade embargo.
Authorities have said the hunt is primarily for studying the whales’ impact on fish stocks. Commercial hunting has been outlawed since 1986 because seven species are endangered.
State Department spokesman Richard Boucher said the U.S. was “extremely disappointed” and that a review of possible sanctions was likely.
