A Garden Grove man was arrested Saturday after assaulting a police officer and initiating a 48-mile chase during which patrol cars were rammed and officers fired guns, police said.

Jose Mauricio Parada Jr., who suffered cuts to his head and arms, as well as several possible broken bones, was booked on suspicion of misdemeanor vandalism, felony assault on a police officer and felony evading arrest.

The incident began about 11:20 a.m. when officers went to the 11300 block of Trask Avenue to deal with a domestic dispute. They were about to arrest Parada when he attacked them, hitting one officer in the head, said Sgt. Benjamin Stauffer, a spokesman for the Garden Grove Police Department.

Parada then got into a car and reportedly rammed several police vehicles that hemmed him in. Police said they unsuccessfully tried using pepper spray, a Taser gun, and breaking the windows of his car to stop him.

Brandishing a large knife, he drove toward officers who were on foot, police said.

Two officers fired at him, but no one was hit. Parada then led police on a high-speed chase ending in the 2500 block of 9th Street in Santa Ana, where he reportedly collided with a parked car and was arrested as he attempted to enter a house.

The assaulted officer was treated for a mild concussion and released.
