Four people were killed early Sunday in West Covina when their car was struck by a suspected drunk driver, police said.

About 1:25 a.m., an Acura Integra ran into the side of the victims’ Toyota Corolla in a residential neighborhood at Cameron Avenue and California Street, said West Covina police Lt. Pete Mena.

The driver of the Toyota, a 23-year-old West Covina woman, and two passengers, a 25-year-old Covina woman and a 34-year-old Rowland Heights man, were pronounced dead at the scene. Another passenger, a 22-year-old Covina man, was taken to County-USC Medical Center, where he died Sunday afternoon. Mena said the names of those involved in the crash were not released because the victims’ families had not yet been notified.

The driver of the Acura, Steven Estrada, 26, and his 30-year-old male passenger, both from West Covina, suffered minor injuries, police said.

Estrada was arrested on suspicion of murder and driving under the influence. He was taken to County-USC Medical Center, where he was booked by police.

Mena said police would seek murder and felony drunk driving charges against Estrada, and present the case to the district attorney’s office on Tuesday.

He said there were no skid marks at the intersection, suggesting that the cars did not slow down before colliding. “We’re assuming the [Acura] driver ran a red light,” Mena said. If the cars were traveling at the speed limit, “that’s still pretty significant speed,” he said.
