From Times Staff and Wire Reports

More pedestrians have been killed by cars in San Francisco this year than last, said police in this city known for its dangerous streets.

With weeks still left in the year, 22 pedestrians have been killed, four more than in 2002.

Heavier traffic is partly to blame, said Capt. Ed Springer, who said that improving business fortunes in the city have led to more commerce and that the closure of an important elevated freeway has forced more cars onto the streets.
