Suggs Is Charged in Assault Case

Baltimore Raven linebacker Terrell Suggs has been charged with assaulting one man with a rod and attacking another in a Phoenix parking lot in March.

He was charged with felony aggravated assault, officials said Tuesday. A preliminary hearing has been set for Jan. 20.

The charge stems from a March 29 fight outside Phoenix Municipal Stadium after a three-on-three basketball tournament.

Suggs set an NCAA record with 24 sacks in 2002 at Arizona State. He leads all NFL rookies with 10 sacks.

The NFL sent out a memo reminding teams of the minority hiring guidelines it set last season.

In the memo, the league’s diversity committee reiterated that all teams must interview at least one minority candidate for coaching vacancies, and banned telephone interviews of candidates. It also mandated that owners get involved in the final interviews.

An MRI exam on Tennessee Titan quarterback Steve McNair’s left ankle revealed a cracked bone spur, and Coach Jeff Fisher said McNair’s status is uncertain for Sunday’s game against the Buffalo Bills.

Owner Daniel Snyder of the Washington Redskins said that he will retain Steve Spurrier as the team’s head coach next season, and Spurrier said that he intends to return, the Washington Post reported.... Dallas Cowboy running back Aveion Cason is on injured reserve after undergoing surgery to repair a torn ligament and cartilage damage in his right knee. Recovery time could be up to nine months.... The Cleveland Browns lost four starters to season-ending injuries in Monday’s loss to St. Louis: defensive end Courtney Brown (ruptured right biceps tendon), running back James Jackson (torn ligament in right knee), kicker Phil Dawson (broken left arm) and offensive guard Chad Beasley (broken right ankle).
