From Times Wire Reports

President Bush named Alphonso Jackson as Housing and Urban Development secretary, replacing Mel Martinez, who resigned with what Republicans say are ambitions to run for the U.S. Senate in Florida.

Jackson has been deputy secretary of HUD since June 2001. He was chief executive of American Electric Power-TEXAS, an Austin, Texas, utility company.

“He’s an experienced executive in the public and private sectors, a man who knows the issues facing HUD and knows how to get things done,” Bush said in announcing the appointment.
