‘The Even Numbers’
for Richard Verrall
The even numbers, as beautiful as vowels
Emerging from the consonantal clasp
Of sounds that contain and yet unbind
The o, the hidden aria, the bud
Unsheathing itself to flower on ear, on air --
What would they do without the impaired, the odd
That show them for what they are?
