From Times Staff and Wire Reports

The city memorial to astronauts killed in the 1986 Challenger shuttle disaster has lost some of its luster, but Councilman Will Schuyler is determined to restore the shrine and add honors to the dead from this year’s Columbia tragedy.

Two of the seven trees planted, one for each crew member who died in the Challenger crash, are gone.

Schuyler said a memorial to the Columbia is fitting in Lompoc because NASA once considered launching spacecraft from nearby Vandenberg Air Force Base.
