A Homecoming Trip

One of the many horses owner Michael Gill has claimed in California is Gentleman Player, a 2-year-old gelding whose first two starts were for owners Pablo Suarez and Ty Leatherman and trainer Doug O’Neill.

A winner by six lengths in his debut, then a distant third at 19-10 in his first try against winners on Nov. 19 at Hollywood Park, Gentleman Player won’t be making his first start for Gill in Inglewood.

Rather, the son of Gentleman is back in New York, where he was bred. Gentleman Player is one of 10 scheduled to run in the $75,000 Damon Runyon at Aqueduct today.

The 1 1/16-mile race was supposed to be run three days ago, but a heavy snowstorm Sunday forced postponement of the card. There is a two-day pick six carry-over of more than $106,000.

Given he’s by Gentleman, who won the Hollywood Gold Cup and Pacific Classic, out of a Kris S. mare, Gentleman Player should have no trouble with the distance, but there’s a question of where he fits on class. In his victory on Hallo- ween at Santa Anita, he was running against $40,000 maiden claimers. Aaron Gryder will ride for trainer Mark Shuman.

Race of the day: Revello, three for seven at Hollywood Park and 0 for 5 at Del Mar and Bay Meadows, is among six California-breds set to meet in Hollywood Park’s seventh, a $38,000 optional claimer at 6 1/2 furlongs. The horse to catch is Midafternoon, who will be making his first appearance since Feb. 26 at Golden Gate Fields for trainer Ruben Cardenas.

One for the road: Maggie My Love adds blinkers in her second start for trainer Armando Lage in today’s fifth at Golden Gate Fields. Alfredo Miranda rides the 2-year-old filly and she might be a single in a pick six with a carry-over of more than $35,000.

Exotically speaking: A pick three using Magnificent Val, Alozaina and Splendeur in the sixth, Midafternoon in the seventh and Refocus and Triptronic in the eighth.

Winners: Previous day/meet total: 2/78. Money: Previous day/meet total: $11/$410.60. Total money bet: $428.
