A fire at an electrical substation Saturday caused a power outage across a large area of the city, Pacific Gas & Electric Co. reported.

The blackout, which started just before 6 p.m., affected about 12,000 customers in parts of downtown San Francisco and the North Beach, Chinatown, Fillmore, Western Addition, Mission, Sunset and Richmond neighborhoods, said PG&E; spokesman Jonathan Franks.

The fire occurred at the Mission substation, which was evacuated. PG&E; did not know when power would be restored, because engineers were waiting to return to the substation to investigate, Franks said.

“We’re waiting for the Fire Department to tell us it’s safe to get our engineers in there and figure out what we can do,” he said.
