Drivers Shouldn’t Need Help Concentrating

Share

Let me get this straight. The Federal Communications Commission is establishing a wireless warning system to tell drivers when it’s safe to change lanes or use their brakes to avoid collisions (“Airwaves Set Aside for Road Warning System,” Dec. 18).

Transportation Secretary Norman Y. Mineta claims this radio-based system will help prevent crashes and “let drivers concentrate on driving.”

What does Mineta think drivers are supposed to be concentrating on while behind the wheel?

I drive a lot, and I think too many drivers are concentrating on their cellphones. And I suspect most of them aren’t listening to the radio while they’re not concentrating on their driving.

I thought drivers were supposed to concentrate on their driving to begin with. Silly me.
