Washington’s Mendiola Gets 43 in Rout of UCLA

Giuliana Mendiola scored a school-record 43 points to lead No. 25 Washington to a 111-77 victory over UCLA in a Pacific 10 Conference game at Seattle on Saturday.

The Huskies, who improved to 17-3 overall and 9-2 in the conference, opened the game making six of their first seven three-point shots, including two each from Loree Payne and Emily Autrey. Washington led 24-4 only five minutes into the game.

Mendiola, a junior and former Lake Forest El Toro standout, made 15 of 20 shots from the field, set a career high with six three-pointers and had 12 rebounds. Autrey tied a career high with 23 points.

The victory extended Washington’s home winning streak to 11 games -- the sixth longest in school history.

Michelle Greco, who leads the Pac-10 in scoring at 19.2 points per game, had 29 for the Bruins (12-8, 7-4). Nikki Blue set a freshman scoring record for UCLA with 35 points.

The Bruins got only as close as 21 points in the second half, 83-62. UCLA has lost four of its last five games.

The 111 points were a season high for Washington, only three short of the school record of 114.

The Huskies’ start is their best since they went 17-2 during the 1989-90 season.

USC 89, Washington State 36 -- Five players scored in double figures led by Rometra Craig’s 19 points to lead the Trojans (10-12, 5-6) past the Cougars (0-19, 0-11) at Pullman, Wash.

USC shot 50% and held Washington State to 22.2% in handing the Cougars their 43rd consecutive loss.

The streak ranks third in NCAA Division I history, behind Sacramento State (44) and Long Island (58).

Leading 8-4 in the first five minutes, the Trojans scored 36 of the next 39 points and led 48-17 at halftime.

USC started the second half with a 23-7 run for a 71-24 lead.

In addition to Craig, the Trojans had double-figure scoring performances from Meghan Gnekow (17), Rachel Woodward (13 and a game-high nine rebounds), Jessica Cheeks (11) and Ebony Hoffman (11).

No. 22 UC Santa Barbara 70, Long Beach State 48 -- Lindsay Taylor scored 30 points and made all 11 of her free throws to lead the Gauchos (15-3, 8-1) over the 49ers (8-12, 5-2) in a Big West Conference game at Goleta.

Taylor made nine of 12 shots and her perfect night from the free-throw line followed a 14-for-14 performance against UC Irvine on Thursday night.

Santa Barbara raced out to a 22-5 lead and was never seriously challenged. The Gauchos led 36-16 at halftime and were ahead by as many as 26 in the second half.

The 49ers led the Big West until a loss to Cal Poly San Luis Obispo on Thursday. But they had yet to play UC Santa Barbara, to which they have now lost 21 consecutive times.

Kristen Mann had 15 points for the Gauchos and Lisa Willett had 10. Brandy Richardson had a game-high 12 rebounds.

Glory Johnson led Long Beach State with 12 points.
