Seizure of Cars Urged in Drug, Racing Arrests

From Times Staff Reports

A City Council panel recommended Monday that the Los Angeles Police Department be authorized to seize the cars of people who are arrested for selling drugs or illegal street racing, and agreed to study whether to extend the forfeiture rule to people who flee the police in vehicles.

The recommendation by the council’s Public Safety Committee was made even as representatives of the city attorney’s office warned that they lack the staff to handle a large number of vehicle seizures and sales, which one official said could reach 12,000 a year.

Councilwoman Cindy Miscikowski, the panel chairwoman, said the seizure of cars used in races may not have to be done often to reduce the contests.
