A 16-year-old girl and a 42-year-old man died Monday following separate accidents in Irvine.

Rebecca Cambridge, a student at Northwood High School, was struck by a car and killed about 5 p.m. while jogging on Bryan Avenue near Eastwood.

“From what we can tell,” said Sgt. Wally Prestidge, a spokesman for the Irvine Police Department, “she’d just been jogging eastbound on the sidewalk ... when she started running diagonally across Bryan. She didn’t look back until just before the car made contact.”

Cambridge, who was not in a crosswalk, was pronounced dead at the scene. The cause of the accident remains under investigation, Prestidge said.

An hour earlier, Hoang Nguyen, 42, of Huntington Beach died at Santa Ana’s Western Medical Center of injuries he sustained about 7:45 a.m. in an accident at MacArthur Boulevard and Douglas.

Police said Nguyen’s vehicle had rear-ended another car, jumped across a center divider and careened into a tree.
