From Times Staff Reports

A 12-year-old Port Hueneme boy was killed when a city trash truck hit him as he rode his bike home from school, authorities said.

Philip Devine was riding his bike westbound on the sidewalk along Pleasant Valley Road when he jumped the curb into the street to avoid some pedestrians, said Craig Stevens, senior deputy medical examiner.

The boy apparently did not see the truck, which was also headed westbound, police said. The accident occurred about 2:46 p.m., and the boy was pronounced dead two hours later at St. John’s Regional Medical Center in Oxnard.
