Arizona Outlasts Washington

Salim Stoudamire scored 25 points, including a big three-point basket late in overtime, and Channing Frye had 24 points and 12 rebounds and No. 2 Arizona survived a scare to beat Washington, 88-85, Thursday night at Seattle.

The Wildcats, who improved to 17-2 overall and 9-1 in the Pacific 10 Conference, beat the Huskies (8-11, 3-7) for the 12th time in 13 meetings, but they had to sweat this one out in front of a capacity crowd of 10,000 raucous fans eager for an upset.

Frye got free for a layup with 20 seconds to go, giving Arizona an 87-84 cushion. But the dramatic outcome wasn’t settled until an insurance free throw in the closing seconds by Rick Anderson.

Washington’s Nate Robinson matched a career high with 19 points, Curtis Allen scored 15, Will Conroy had 11 and Bobby Jones had 10 points and 11 rebounds.

Luke Walton scored 13 points to become the 32nd Arizona player to score 1,000 points in his career.

Jones made two free throws to give Washington an 84-82 lead with 1:35 left in overtime. After a timeout, Stoudamire swished a three-pointer that put the Wildcats ahead, 85-84, with 1:18 left.

The Huskies were down to the final chance, and Robinson worked the backcourt looking for an open teammate before settling for a three-point try from the top of the key that bounced off the rim.

Earlier, the 5-foot-8 Robinson made a scoop shot in the lane against the 6-8 Anderson to tie it at 78-78 and force overtime.

Robinson wasn’t as fortunate this time. However, Jones collected the rebound, drew a foul and made the first free throw to pull the Huskies to 87-85 with 1.1 seconds to go, prompting Washington Coach Lorenzo Romar to call a timeout to consider his options.

Jones stepped back to the line intending to miss, but he put up an airball that gave the ball back to the Wildcats.

The last time the Huskies had defeated such a highly ranked opponent, Romar was playing the point. He was a player when the Huskies upset No. 1 UCLA, 69-68, on Feb. 22, 1979.

Another upset was brewing at halftime. Washington led, 41-39, aided by 15 offensive rebounds and a 28-18 overall edge on the boards.

The Huskies kept rolling in the second half, with Conroy, Jones and Allen combining for four straight three-pointers during a 14-6 run that put Washington ahead, 57-47, with 13:10 remaining.

Then came a big swing for the Wildcats.

Walton crashed the lane for a basket to break a 71-71 tie, drawing a fourth foul in the process on Washington swingman Doug Wrenn. After the whistle, Wrenn spiked the ball in frustration and received a technical foul, fouling out.

Oregon 79, No. 25 Stanford 64 -- Luke Ridnour scored all 23 of his points in the second half and extended his free-throw streak to a school-record 43 in a row to lead the Ducks (16-5, 6-4) over the Cardinal (16-6, 7-3) at Eugene, Ore.

Ridnour sat for the final 18:03 of the first half after picking up his second foul in 32 seconds. He came back to help Oregon stop Stanford’s four-game winning streak.

“I was pretty fired up, I wanted to play bad,” Ridnour said. “I was frustrated in the first half.”

In the second half, Ridnour made seven of 13 shots and all six of his free throws. The previous school mark for free throws was 41 in a row.

“He came out in the second half and was going to score the ball, you could see it in his eyes,” Stanford Coach Mike Montgomery said.

Oregon, which started the week by dropping out of the top 25 for the first time in 18 weeks, beat the Cardinal for the second time in 15 games. The Ducks avenged an 81-57 loss earlier this season at Stanford.

California 84, Oregon State 71 -- Amit Tamir scored 27 points, including seven of 11 on three-point shots to lead the Golden Bears (15-4, 8-2) over the Beavers (11-8, 4-6) at Corvallis, Ore.

Joe Shipp had 18 points and nine rebounds for California.

California jumped out to a 14-3 lead. But Oregon State got as close as 34-28 before California took a 38-30 halftime advantage. Tamir made six three-pointers and had 18 points in the first half.

California ended a two-game losing streak, losing at Arizona and Arizona State last weekend, and defeated Oregon State for the eighth consecutive time.

Arizona State 87, Washington State 54 -- Freshman forward Ike Diogu scored 26 points and had 10 rebounds, and Tommy Smith scored 17 points to lead the Sun Devils (14-7, 6-4) over the Cougars (5-14, 0-10) at Pullman, Wash.

Washington State has lost 10 consecutive games, and 17 in a row in the conference. The Cougars have one victory on their last 30 conference games.

Washington State trailed, 52-36, at halftime despite shooting 70%. Arizona State shot 68% in the first half and 65% for the game, and the Sun Devils tied a school record by making 72.7% of their three-pointers (eight of 11).
