Roy Has Upper Hand on Brodeur, Devils

Patrick Roy outdueled Martin Brodeur in a matchup of two of the league’s top goalies, and the Colorado Avalanche defeated the New Jersey Devils, 3-1, Tuesday night at Denver.

Milan Hejduk had a goal and two assists, and Peter Forsberg had three assists for Colorado, which extended its winning streak to six games and its unbeaten streak to 10 (8-0-2).

Roy made 32 saves and Brodeur made 15.

Dallas 2, Carolina 1 -- Sergei Zubov scored twice, including the game-winner with one-tenth of a second left in overtime at Dallas.

Mike Modano, playing in his 1,000th game, assisted on Zubov’s third-period goal that tied the score.

Edmonton 5, Toronto 4 -- Eric Brewer and Shawn Horcoff scored in the third period to end the host Maple Leafs’ five-game winning streak.

The game featured three fights and 20 penalties.

Montreal 3, Boston 1 -- Mathieu Garon made 42 saves to win his second consecutive start and lead the Canadiens at home.

Niklas Sundstrom scored his fourth goal in nine games with Montreal, which won its second in a row after a four-game losing streak.

St. Louis 3, Buffalo 2 -- Jeff Finley scored with 4:59 left to end a 173-game goal drought and lift the Blues at Buffalo, N.Y. Finley had not scored since Nov. 25, 2000.

The Blues lost top playmaker Doug Weight, who did not return after being cut below the nose when he was struck by a puck in the second period.

New York Islanders 6, Tampa Bay 2 -- Dave Scatchard had his second three-goal game this season, and Garth Snow stopped 40 shots at Uniondale, N.Y.

Scatchard didn’t have a hat trick before this season.
