Ailing Domingo on the mend

Share

It’s rare for Placido Domingo to cancel even one performance -- so it came as a surprise when the globe-hopping tenor was forced to cancel his scheduled Jan. 11-19 appearances in Los Angeles Opera’s “Concert of Passion and Poetry” at Dorothy Chandler Pavilion due to a bronchial infection. It was even more of a surprise when Domingo canceled performances of Tchaikovsky’s “Queen of Spades” in Paris on Jan. 26 and Barcelona Feb. 1-16 due to the same lingering infection.

Domingo’s spokeswoman, Nancy Seltzer, said Domingo was on the mend and might have been well enough to perform in the last few concerts in Barcelona, but could not go on because he’d been ill during rehearsals.

“ ‘Queen of Spades’ is very complicated, it’s not something you just walk into,” Seltzer said. She added that Domingo is confident that he’ll be back on stage for performances March 5-17 of “Die Walkure” in Madrid.
