Ultimately Wrong
Re “ ‘Ultimate Fighting’ Seeks State’s OK to Move Out of the Shadows,” Feb. 19: California should not sanction “ultimate fighting.” An event in which one participant attempts to seriously injure the other or render him or her unconscious is immoral. Professional boxing, for the same reason, should be outlawed.
Whereas in other sporting events (e.g., football) an injury to a participant is incidental, in boxing and “ultimate fighting” it is the essence of the “sport.” Such barbarity should not be legitimized.
