Sanitation Board Bans Some Water Softeners
A Santa Clarita Valley sanitation board voted Tuesday to prohibit the installation of home water-softening devices that discharge salty compounds into the Santa Clara River.
Los Angeles County sanitation officials say they believe water softeners are responsible for two-thirds of the chlorides that residents add to Santa Clarita Valley sewers. If chloride levels are not reduced, ratepayers could have to pay for a $400-million desalination project.
The ordinance takes effect in 30 days. Violators would face a fine of up to $1,000 and a possible 30-day jail sentence.
