Park Attendance Dips to Lowest in 12 Years

From Staff and Wire Reports

This national park is poised to record its lowest annual attendance since 1990. About 3.4 million people visited the park in 2002, officials said. That’s a decrease of 750,000 since 1996, a downward trend repeating itself in each of the last six years.

Officials blame setbacks, such as bad weather and rising park fees for the decline. The Sept. 11 terrorist attacks are blamed for holding down the number of international visitors.

The figures greet incoming Supt. Michael Tollefson, due to begin work in a few days.
