From a Times Staff Report

The Ventura County Sheriff’s Department bomb squad detonated a small explosive device that washed ashore this week at the Surfers Knoll area.

A jogger found the device about 4:30 p.m. Thursday and immediately contacted the Ventura Harbor Patrol and Ventura police.

The device, which was an aerosol can with several small explosives taped to it, is known as a seal bomb, authorities said. Such devices are used by fishermen to scare away seals.
