The sonar search of the Berkeley Marina for a missing Modesto woman has revealed an object in the murky water that could be a human body, Modesto police said Thursday.

Inclement weather forced a halt to the search, which probably will not be resumed until Saturday, Officer Doug Ridenour said. He said the department would not speculate further until the object has been retrieved by divers.

The search for Laci Peterson, eight months pregnant when she vanished, began Christmas Eve, when her husband, Scott, reported her missing after he said he returned to their Modesto home from a solo fishing trip to the marina.

Police have not identified the husband as a suspect, but they said they have not ruled out anyone.

The search has not been confined to the marina. Officers, who have received more than 1,000 tips in the case, have also looked in rural areas and waterways in Calaveras, Mariposa, Merced, San Joaquin and Tuolumne counties.

Rewards totaling more than $500,000 have been offered for information leading to the woman’s safe return.
