A title is indeed a slippery slope

When the Mark Taper Forum announced that it would produce Kia Corthron’s new play as part of the Taper, Too series, the title was “Mirror Merge at the Slippery Slope.” But now it’s called “Slide Glide the Slippery Slope” -- which, it turns out, was the play’s original title.

The “Slide Glide” title “certainly slid off the tongue well but felt too easy somehow,” she explained. “Later I came up with ‘Mirror Merge at the Slippery Slope,’ which felt more clearly about the play -- which starts with almost-36-year-old twins [hence ‘Mirror’] meeting for the first time since their separation at 6 months old. I felt better about the title, though it lost its musicality, as practically everyone else in the world complained.”

Apparently the pressure was intense. One person felt “that ‘Slide Glide’ was less literal. Another said ‘Slide Glide’ did have its own meaning.... I agreed that it sounded better, so OK! OK! OK! I changed it back.”
