Hrdina’s Late Goal Wins It for Penguins

Jan Hrdina scored the winning goal with 5:58 left and Sebastien Caron made 31 saves to lead the Pittsburgh Penguins to a 2-1 victory over the Boston Bruins on Monday night at Boston.

Hrdina scored his 14th goal when Alexei Kovalev fed him a pass coming out of the corner that he wristed past goalie Steve Shields.

Mario Lemieux returned to the Penguin lineup after missing three games because of a strained groin. He played six shifts in the first period, but did not return after that.

Washington 4, New York Islanders 3 -- Jaromir Jagr scored two goals, including the winner with 36.4 seconds to play in overtime to lead the Capitals at Washington.

Jagr also had two assists, giving him 11 points in the last two games. That is the best two-game stretch of Jagr’s career and he is the first player with 11 points in a two-game span since Lemieux in November 1995.

Detroit 5, Chicago 4 -- Nicklas Lidstrom scored his second goal 47 seconds into overtime to give the Red Wings a victory over the Blackhawks at Detroit.

The defending Stanley Cup champions beat Chicago at home for the first time in 10 meetings. Chicago’s last loss in Detroit was April 2, 1999.

Montreal 4, Calgary 2 -- Rookie Marcel Hossa had his first career two-goal game and Jose Theodore made 26 saves to lead the Canadiens at Montreal.

New York Rangers 5, Toronto 1 -- Petr Nedved scored three goals, and Eric Lindros had a goal and assist at New York for the Rangers, who have won two straight for the first time since Dec. 1-3.

Atlanta 7, Philadelphia 4 -- Dany Heatley scored three goals and Marc Savard had a goal and two assists at Philadelphia and the Thrashers ended the Flyers’ six-game winning streak.

New Jersey 6, Florida 2 -- Michael Rupp celebrated his 23rd birthday by scoring twice in his first NHL game to lead the Devils at East Rutherford, N.J.

Edmonton 8, Columbus 5 -- Georges Laraque and Todd Marchant each scored twice and Ryan Smyth had a goal and three assists to lead the Oilers at Edmonton, Canada.
