Jet Crash Forces Marine Aviators to Eject at Sea

A military plane crashed off the coast of San Clemente Island Friday during a routine training exercise, forcing two Marines to eject over water.

Capt. Matthew Shortal, 31, and Capt. Michael Johnson, 32, both stationed at Marine Corps Air Station Miramar, were picked up after spending less than 30 minutes in the water. They were taken to Naval Medical Center San Diego for evaluation. The cause of the F/A-18 D Hornet fighter crash was under investigation.
