Eisenhower Has Streak Stopped

Daryl Diggins drove into the lane and made a spinning layup with 29 seconds left Friday night to help Fontana end Rialto Eisenhower’s 36-game Citrus Belt League winning streak with a 68-67 victory at Eisenhower.

“King of the court!” Diggins yelled after tipping away a full-court pass on Eisenhower’s final possession, ending the Eagles’ bid to complete a 17-point comeback in the second half.

Sean Green led Fontana (19-1, 4-0 in league play), No. 6 in The Times’ Southland rankings, with 20 points and helped the Steelers limit Boston College-bound forward Sean Marshall to 11 points.

Marshall had given No. 23 Eisenhower (13-7, 3-1) a 67-66 lead with 49 seconds left after converting three consecutive free throws. Jarel Perry led the Eagles with 16 points.

Diggins finished with 12 points and Mike Ephraim added 16 for Fontana, which handed Eisenhower its last league loss in 1999.

Lake Forest El Toro rallied from an 18-point deficit and defeated host Mission Viejo, 66-54, in overtime to take sole possession of first place in the South Coast League.

The No. 15 Chargers (19-2, 5-0) trailed, 31-13, in the second quarter and 41-32 at the start of the fourth before taking their first lead, 47-45, on Will Brown’s steal and layup with 2 minutes 45 seconds remaining in the game.

The No. 13 Diablos (19-2, 4-1) moved ahead, but Darryl Best tied the score, 49-49, for El Toro on a reverse layup as time expired in regulation. The Chargers then outscored Mission Viejo, 17-2, in the first 3 1/2 minutes of the four-minute overtime period.

Patrick Carney scored 15 points and Best and Matt Claflin each added 14 for El Toro. Jake Collins had 19 points for Mission Viejo.

Hanis Madyun scored 25 points, including five three-pointers, and Sone Finister added 21 to help host L.A. Crenshaw (14-5, 3-0) win a Coliseum League game, 81-75, over L.A. Fremont.

The Cougars trailed, 13-0, to start the game, fell behind by 17 points in the first half and trailed by 10 points at halftime. But they opened a seven-point lead in the fourth quarter behind a 28-11 surge fueled by a pressing defense. Then Fremont (10-5, 2-1) took a 70-68 lead on a basket by Josh Arnold with 3:28 left. Crenshaw finally took control on a Madyun three-pointer with 1:44 left to lead, 75-70. Mark Bradford led Fremont with 21 points.

The state CIF Executive Committee has approved a recommendation to include exhibition girls’ matches at the state wrestling championships this season.

The exhibitions will be limited to two matches in each of eight weight classes for a total of 16 matches. Wrestlers will be selected based on previous records in regional girls’ tournaments throughout the season and eligibility is by invitation only.

The state tournament is March 7-8 at University of the Pacific in Stockton.

About 1,500 people showed up a week ago to watch San Clemente defeat Fullerton Troy in double-overtime, 53-51, giving the nonleague girls’ basketball showdown a championship atmosphere as teams get ready for their playoff runs.

The same should be expected tonight in San Clemente, where the third-ranked Tritons play host to seventh-ranked Brea Olinda at 7 p.m. San Clemente is riding a 10-game winning streak, and Brea has not lost in the last nine games.

Big matchups can be seen in nearly every corner of the Southland today, as No. 16 Artesia plays at No. 1 Lynwood, and senior-dominated Saugus plays at No. 19 Ventura Buena.

At Chino Hills Ayala, the Ayala Extravaganza, beginning at 9 a.m., includes nine games. The premier games feature No. 4 Long Beach Poly against No. 12 Fullerton Rosary at 4:30 p.m., No. 24 Ayala against Mission Viejo Capistrano Valley at 6 and No. 10 Troy against No. 18 Palmdale at 7:30.

The Lake Forest El Toro girls’ soccer team has been the early-season surprise in the South Coast League.

The Chargers (7-5-1, 3-1-0), who finished 1 1/2 games out of second place but wound up fourth in the league and missed the playoffs last year, began league play this season with victories over Dana Point Dana Hills, ranked No. 2 by The Times, No. 10 San Clemente and Mission Viejo Trabuco Hills.

“This is our year to do well,” said Coach Kevin Otsuji, in his seventh season at El Toro. “We’ve surprised everybody a little bit, but now we have to keep it up.”

The Chargers faltered last week in a 2-1 loss to No. 3 Mission Viejo Capistrano Valley (13-4-1, 3-2), but the chances of continuing their strong start should improve in the next few days, when two starters are expected to play for the first time this season.

Senior sweeper Alicia Lloyd, who has made a commitment to Loyola Marymount, has been sidelined all season with torn ligaments in her right ankle. Lloyd, however, practiced for the first time this week and is expected to play in today’s 1 p.m. match at Mission Viejo.

Junior forward Katie Carney is scheduled to return for her first game at Dana Hills on Thursday, after sitting out the first half of the season because of a school-imposed suspension, according to Otsuji.

Kyle Uebelhardt, who set five school records this season while playing quarterback for Simi Valley Royal, has committed to Dartmouth.
