Utah Ends BYU’s Home Run

Share

Despite the absence of Coach Rick Majerus, Utah ended Brigham Young’s home winning streak at 44 games by defeating the Cougars, 79-75, Saturday at Provo, Utah.

Majerus missed the game to attend the funeral of the stepfather of Clipper guard Andre Miller, a former Utah All-American. Majerus said he felt obligated when Albert Robinson’s family asked him to speak at the services Saturday in Los Angeles.

Utah didn’t miss a beat with assistant coach Kerry Rupp in charge, becoming the first visiting team to win at the Marriott Center since New Mexico defeated BYU, 78-74, on Feb. 17, 2000.

Seventh-ranked Oklahoma now has the nation’s longest home winning streak at 32.

Marc Jackson scored 17 points and Britton Johnsen had 12 points and 12 rebounds for the Utes (14-4, 2-1 in the Mountain West Conference). Utah made 25 of 51 shots and all 17 of its free throws, and had a 38-33 rebounding edge over the Cougars (13-5, 2-1).

Nick Jacobson grabbed a rebound as time expired, setting off a celebration in front of the Utah bench. The Utes pointed at the crowd of 21,412 -- the largest at BYU since a game against Utah in January 2000 -- prompting a few disgruntled fans to throw empty plastic bottles and other debris as the visitors left the court.
