Lavin Keeping to Routine

Steve Lavin is scheduled to meet with Athletic Director Dan Guerrero today in another of the weekly brainstorming sessions on the state of the Bruins. But the meetings are anything but routine.

Lavin, the coach of seven years, sits across the table from someone he knows is expected to fire him immediately after the season.

What of substance can they possibly discuss?

“Dan knows athletics, he knows kids and he has good ideas,” Lavin said. “He’s also been very supportive of the team, and of me, through this process.”

UCLA is 4-11, has lost six games in a row and the climate at Pauley Pavilion is certain to be toxic in home games against Oregon and Oregon State this week.

Lavin is under increasing fire from much of the home crowd.

Guerrero has not issued a vote of confidence for the coach.

Firing Lavin during the season hasn’t happened, either, and the coach has said he won’t quit.

So the Bruins limp toward their worst season in more than 50 years, and the coach and athletic director will put their heads together one more time to try to devise a way to make the most of the next six weeks.
