Restitution Ordered for L.A. Times Bomb Threat
A man whose bomb threat sparked the evacuation of the downtown offices of the Los Angeles Times for several hours last summer must pay more than $14,000 in restitution, a judge ruled Tuesday.
On Jan. 7, Frederick Bernard Cheaves was sentenced to four years and eight months in state prison. Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Ruffo Espinosa, who imposed restitution of $14,152, noted then that the crime involved “the potential for great violence.”
Cheaves had been convicted of charges that he made bomb- related threats to a 911 emergency operator and a Times security guard on July 29.
