Pincay Can Reach 9,500 Today

Share

Fifteen months after reaching 9,000 victories, when Chichim won the California Cup Distaff on Oct. 28, 2000, Laffit Pincay Jr. is one away from 9,500.

The world’s winningest rider can edge a little closer to the once-unimaginable 10,000 victories when racing resumes at Santa Anita this afternoon.

Fourth in the jockey standings at the current meet behind Patrick Valenzuela, David Flores and Alex Solis, Pincay, who turned 56 Dec. 29, is named on five horses and his best chances would seem to be with Rubin’s Rose in the fourth and Exy in the eighth.

A gray What A Spell filly trained by Bill Spawr, Rubin’s Rose has hit the board in four of her five starts at Santa Anita and is dropping below her claimed level in the 6 1/2-furlong race. She will break from the rail against seven other 4-year-old fillies racing for a $25,000 claiming price.

Exy, a 4-year-old daughter of 1993 Kentucky Derby winner Sea Hero, will be making her first start in a maiden claimer in the eighth. A loser of her first four starts, Exy, owned by Fran and Hal Oliver and trained by Gary Mandella, will break from Post 3 in the mile race.

Pincay, whose last winner was Total Limit in Saturday’s first race, will also ride Jaciro in the second, Saxony in the fifth and Brocky’s Dream in the seventh.

Race of the day: Swiss Lake, a winner of three of six in Europe, will make her U.S. debut for trainer Kristin Mulhall in today’s seventh at Santa Anita. The $65,000 allowance drew eight other fillies and mares who will go about 6 1/2 furlongs on the turf.

Who’s hot: Red Packet. The 4-year-old Bonus Money gelding will try for his sixth consecutive win in today’s seventh at Golden Gate Fields. He has won for three trainers -- Armando Lage, Jerry Hollendorfer and Bill Morey -- during his streak. Ron Warren Jr. has been the rider in four of the five victories.

Who’s not: Eduardo Nunez. The jockey won with only two of his first 50 mounts at Gulfstream Park.
