Proposed Tuition Hike Is Too Steep, Group Says
A lobbying group representing California’s community colleges estimated Wednesday that 206,500 part-time and full-time students would drop out of two-year schools under Gov. Gray Davis’ proposed budget for next year.
The group, the Community College League of California, said Davis’ proposal to raise fees at two-year schools from $11 a unit to $24 a unit in the next school year would drive away many low-income students.
A spokeswoman for Davis, Hilary McLean, said his office thinks the equivalent of 65,000 full-time students would be lost.
