The spy du jour: Bond and dinner

Impeccably dressed and impressively suave, he has a way with girls and gadgets. His name is Bond, James Bond, and every weekend in July he will appear outdoors and on screen during the James Bond Film Festival.

Each Friday and Saturday, the outside wall of a Crate & Barrel will be transformed into a 29-by-18-foot movie screen. In the heart of Pasadena’s Old Town in the One Colorado courtyard, the fest features the first seven Bond films, shown in chronological order over four weekends.

It kicks off Saturday with Agent 007 battling the demented “Dr. No” (1962). The following weekend he pursues a KGB assassin in “From Russia With Love” (1963), then spars with an evil genius in “Goldfinger” (1964). The festival concludes July 26, with the famed Brit thwarting a deadly diamond smuggling operation in “Diamonds Are Forever” (1971).

The One Colorado courtyard accommodates 500. It’s best to arrive early and stake out a picnic spot. Or score prime seating on the second-floor balcony outside the Gordon Biersch brewery, which, with Il Fornaio and Sushi Roku restaurants, offers movie dining and three 007-inspired drinks called “Bondtinis.”

This year’s film fest is One Colorado’s sixth. Last year, it paid tribute to Alfred Hitchcock.

As for Bond, “We just thought it was fun and kitsch,” said Robin Faulk, One Colorado’s marketing manager. “The profiles of the different films are so contemporary. In one film Bond is chasing down a man who’s stockpiling nuclear weapons. In another, it’s biological warfare. It seemed topical but very tongue-in-cheek, so we thought it was just right for the times.”
