The Boston Red Sox hit a record seven home runs against the New York Yankees in powering to a 10-3 victory Friday before 55,144 at Yankee Stadium.

Switch-hitter Bill Mueller homered from both sides of the plate, Jason Varitek and David Ortiz each connected twice and Manny Ramirez hit one.

All of Boston’s runs came on homers, making it easy for Derek Lowe (10-3) to win for the seventh consecutive time. Mueller’s drive into the right-field upper deck in the ninth inning was Boston’s seventh of the game, one more than the Yankees had ever given up.

The Red Sox moved three games behind the East Division leaders, who lost for the fourth time in their last 20 games.

Wells (10-3) set a career high for most homers given up and matched the club record -- in 5 2/3 innings.

Tampa Bay 4, Chicago 3 -- Carl Crawford hit his first homer since opening day, a three-run drive with one out in the bottom of the ninth inning, enabling the Devil Rays to win consecutive games for the first time since May 15-16.

Minnesota 9, Cleveland 2 -- At Minneapolis, Justin Morneau and Corey Koskie each hit a two-run homer and Rick Reed (4-8) won for the first time since May 25. The Twins ended a losing streak at four and won for only the sixth time in 20 games.

Kansas City 9, Detroit 8 -- Michael Tucker had four hits and three RBIs at Kansas City to help the Royals improve to 7-0 against the Tigers this season. Ken Harvey also drove in three runs for the Royals, who lead the Central Division and have their best record (46-38) through 84 games since the 1989 club was 47-37.

Texas 7, Seattle 3 -- Juan Gonzalez hit a three-run homer -- his first in almost a month -- and the Rangers used a five-run fourth inning to hand the Mariners a road loss. The Mariners’ 30-14 road record is the best in the majors.
