A brush fire swept across the rugged hills and canyons north of Castaic on Monday, closing northbound lanes of the Golden State Freeway for several hours and charring more than 100 acres, Los Angeles County fire officials said.

The fire began about 2:30 p.m. near the Templin Highway exit of Interstate 5 and briefly threatened the Paradise Ranch Motor Home Park, fire Inspector Edward Osorio said. But by evening, no evacuations had been ordered.

Nearly 200 firefighters fought the blaze, aided by aircraft, Osorio said.

Firefighters had to contend with spot fires ignited by sparks half a mile ahead of the fire line.

“Firefighters try to get in front of the flames, so when it starts behind them with a spot fire they have to regroup and set up again,” Osorio said. “It’s very difficult.”

The fire was almost entirely contained by nightfall.
