A consumer’s guide to the best and worst of sports media and merchandise. Ground rules: If it can be read, played, heard, observed, worn, viewed, dialed or downloaded, it’s in play here. One exception: No products will be endorsed.

What: “Cooking With the Champs”

Authors: Angel players, coaches, executives, broadcasters, etc.

Publishers: Angel wives and girlfriends

Price: $10

When the Lakers won their second of three straight championships in 2001, they put out a cookbook chock full of recipes -- more than 200 pages’ worth. It was the second time the Lakers had put out such a book. The first was in 1985.

Now the Angels have followed suit, although this cookbook is only 58 pages. But as with the Laker cookbook, this too has all kinds of fun things, not to be taken too seriously.

There are recipes from Angel players, coaches, executives and broadcasters, and we also learn the contributors’ food favorites. For instance, Kevin Appier’s favorite restaurant is Mimi’s. Obviously, no gourmet here.

David Eckstein’s favorite dessert or candy is bubble gum. Bill Stoneman lists salmon as his favorite food.

The Rally Monkey’s favorite food is listed as banana bread. The monkey offers two recipes -- one for banana split pie and another for bananas foster.

The cookbook is available at the main Halo Headquarters and the Angels’ Team Store during home games. Or it can be ordered by phone: (714) 940-2157. Proceeds benefit the Second Harvest Food Bank of Orange County.
