Ho-hum response

Contrary to Kenneth Turan’s jaded take (“Yo Ho, Ho-Hum, A Pirate’s Life,” July 9), my son and I found “Pirates of the Caribbean” to be a rollicking good time. The glory days of Errol Flynn came to mind. It has been generations since “Captain Blood” sprang to the screen, and many new generations need to be introduced to the adventure and romance of the pirate world. Along with the exploding powder kegs, well-executed broadsides, and a flaming rum signal fire, the verbal parrying of Johnny Depp and Geoffrey Rush had me laughing and cheering like the rest of the kids. Let’s toss this effete landlubber movie critic and his blind eye into the drink where he can wallow in the tedious, pretentious, artsy muck with the other invertebrates.
