From Times Staff and Wire Reports

Australian scientists, hoping to increase understanding of both human genetics and sustainable management of the country’s unique marsupials, have launched a project to map kangaroo DNA.

The new Centre for the Kangaroo Genome will seek information about the DNA of kangaroos and hopes eventually to map the genetic structure of the Tammar wallaby.

Small Tammar wallabies, once widespread on Australia’s mainland, are restricted almost entirely to Kangaroo Island off South Australia state.
