Help Is on the Way for UCLA Football

UCLA’s football team received five commitments from Southern California high school players in the last two weeks.

Those who committed were offensive linemen Brian Abraham of Rancho Cucamonga and Shannon Tevaga of La Mirada, defensive lineman Kenneth Lombard of Bellflower St. John Bosco, linebacker Will Price of Anaheim Western and punter Aaron Perez of Covina Charter Oak.

Nine players selected to The Times’ high school all-star football team, including Glenn Davis Award winner Whitney Lewis of Ventura St. Bonaventure, have been selected to participate in the 52nd Shrine All-Star Football Classic at 5 p.m. on July 19 at Mt. San Antonio College in Walnut.

The game’s format will feature seniors from private schools against their public-school counterparts. The event is the major Los Angeles fundraiser for the Shriners Hospitals for children.

Among those joining Lewis, a receiver and running back headed to USC in the fall, on the private-school roster will be Times’ all-star Joe Cowan, a defensive back from Bellflower St. John Bosco (UCLA).

Times’ all-stars on the public-school roster include Jeff Kline, a quarterback from Los Alamitos, and Freddie Parish, a defensive back from Long Beach Poly (Notre Dame).

Tickets are $12. The game will be televised by Fox Sports Net 2.

Domenique Manning of Riverside North High and Michael Haddan of Irvine Woodbridge advanced to the finals of the girls’ 100-meter high hurdles and boys’ 800, respectively, in the World Youth track and field championships at Sherbrooke, Canada, on Friday.

Manning ran a career-best 13.35 to finish second in her semifinal. Haddan ran 1:53.35 to finish second in his semifinal.

Touchdown runs by Santa Ana Valley’s Cliff Mason, San Clemente’s Beau Budde and Santa Ana Calvary Chapel’s Terry Mermer led the South to a 22-7 victory in the 44th Orange County North-South All-Star football game at Orange Coast College. Terrell Vinson of Irvine and Justin Williams of Mission Viejo were named offensive and defensive players of the game.... Walnut’s Daniel Al-Gattas threw touchdown and two-point conversion passes to Hacienda Heights Los Altos’ Peter Suarez with 25 seconds left to give the East a 20-19 victory over the West in the National Football Foundation and Hall of Fame All-Star Football Game at El Monte Arroyo High. Pasadena Muir’s Kris Riggins caught three touchdown passes for the East.
