A Busy Day for Baffert

Share

Two sons of two Kentucky Derby winners trained by Bob Baffert are scheduled to make their debuts in today’s sixth at Hollywood Park.

Consecrate, a gray son of 1997 Derby winner Silver Charm, will break into the game for Baffert and owner James McIngvale, who teamed to win Sunday’s Swaps with 8-1 longshot During.

Baffert also will saddle Quiet Cash, a son of 1998 Derby hero Real Quiet, for owner-breeder Mike Pegram, who also raced the colt’s sire.

Consecrate and Quiet Cash are two of nine first-time starters in the race, a $44,000 maiden affair at five furlongs. Ten were entered, but Tiznuf was scratched Tuesday.

Purchased for $130,000 last September at Keeneland, Consecrate shows two 47 flat drills at Santa Anita -- the latest out of the gate -- while Quiet Cash worked in 48 1/5 from the gate and 1:00 1/5.

Race of the day: Forest Heiress, who has won eight of 14 overall, heads a field of eight fillies and mares in the $65,000-added My Juliet at Belmont Park. Mike Luzzi will ride Forest Heiress.

One for the road: The Dark Night shortens up and switches to the dirt as he makes his second start for trainer Patrick Biancone in today’s fourth at Belmont Park. The barn has a good record with second-time starters and the field in the seven-furlong race isn’t strong. Tony Farina will ride the French-bred gelding.

Exotically speaking: A pick three using all in the sixth, singling Varnished in the seventh and Firstship and Road To The Castle in the eighth.

Winners: Previous day/meet total: 2/166. Money: Previous day/meet total: $11.80/$885.60. Total money bet: $1,036.
