A little sugar

So, Mark McGrath’s a sweetheart. We were introduced by clubland O.G. Rick Calamaro (Nacional/Ivar) at Concorde, the fab-o new Cahuenga Boulevard nightclub, and the Sugar Ray singer couldn’t have been a nicer guy.

In the house for the opening of promoter Brent Bolthouse’s hot and heavy new Wednesday night were David Spade and Macy Gray, who delighted everyone by whipping out a sampling of songs from her new album, “The Trouble With Being Myself.”

An appearance by Fire Marshall Bob, i.e., inspector Robert Gladden, kept the capacity low and the fun factor high for those who arrived early.

With a bit of luck

Duran Duran’s hyped Roxy appearance last week was a boon for those lucky enough to score tix. Among the blessed were Gwen and Gavin, and No Doubt’s Adrian Young and Tony Kanal, as well as Rodney Bingenheimer and singer Donovan Leitch.... That Thursday night rock haven, the Cadillac Club, celebrates its sixth birthday at Goldfingers on July 31. Among the headliners are Faster Pussycat and Motochrist.... Cinespace has parted ways with chef Monica May (North/Smashbox). The Hollywood Boulevard venue is moving away from its dinner-and-a-movie concept to become more of a promoter-driven nightclub. May, whose credits include being Harrison Ford’s onetime personal chef, is now consulting for Cedd Moses, who recently purchased a number of downtown watering holes. Moses has hired her to create a menu for his 4th and Main Street coffeehouse, Banquette, which recently scored a beer and wine license. ... Last week’s art opening for “Los Angeles for the Emotionally Blind,” at the Zero One Gallery, attracted such luminaries as producer Rick Rubin, Anthony Kiedis and Serj from System of a Down.... And speaking of stars, I spotted Babs at Prive, the tony beauty parlor on Beverly Boulevard.

Tonight at the Key Club, you don’t wanna miss the return of Too Short, a.k.a. Shortie Da Pimp, one of the greatest rap artists ever.... The hottest jewelry designer on the scene right now is Angel Clouthier. Her line is called Priss, and such baubles as lucite-and-steel knuckle-duster rings, guitar-pick earrings and pearl-chandelier earrings with boom-box charms are adorning such divas as Kylie Minogue, Eve and Jade Jagger. You can find Priss at Fred Segal and the Madison boutiques and on the lobes of chicas at Concorde, Nacional and Star Shoes.
