The Golden Gate Bridge is at high risk of collapse or damage if a major earthquake strikes, according to a new report by bridge district officials.
The 66-year-old span that links San Francisco with Marin County could fail if there is an earthquake of magnitude 7 or greater on the San Andreas or Hayward faults, the district concluded in its latest status report.
A $396-million project is underway to strengthen the bridge, but work may not be completed until 2010.
