Private security guards in the San Francisco Bay Area approved their first union contract Saturday, agreeing to a deal that will provide better pay and training, union officials announced.

Guards who are members of the Service Employees International Union voted to accept a new contract with eight security companies, the union said.

The contract, which covers 3,300 guards in San Francisco, Alameda and Contra Costa counties, makes the Bay Area the second metropolitan area in the country to have a union contract for security guards, according to the union. Chicago already had such a contract.

The contract will result in an average increase in pay and benefits of 24%, and provides for a new training program, the union said.
