From Times Staff and Wire Reports

Ten new suspected cases of monkeypox infections were identified in Indiana on Tuesday, bringing the overall total to 48.

Only five of the cases have been confirmed by genetic tests, but researchers believe virtually all will prove to be monkeypox produced by contact with infected pet prairie dogs obtained through a Chicago distributor. There are now 23 confirmed or suspected cases of monkeypox in Indiana, 20 in Wisconsin and five in Illinois.

Texas officials said federal authorities had ordered two prairie dog distributors not to ship any animals until their health could be verified.
