HOV Lane Work to Begin for Orange, Pomona Freeways
The state plans to begin work soon on new connectors that would link the high-occupancy vehicle lanes at an interchange in Diamond Bar.
Gov. Gray Davis, who kicked off the project last week, said the project would increase mobility and make the HOV lanes more accessible along the Orange and Pomona freeways.
A Caltrans spokeswoman, Judy Gish, said that the interchange is one of the busiest in Los Angeles County and that motorists’ safety was a major issue in the proposal.
A driver now must cross three lanes of traffic to access connecting freeways and HOV lanes. A direct connection will allow HOV traffic to move between Orange and Pomona freeways without leaving the HOV lane.
Gish said that fewer lane changes will be safer for motorists.
The project includes adding a lane to the Grand Avenue off-ramp from the northbound Orange Freeway to the eastbound Pomona Freeway and realigning the Grand Avenue on-ramp to the westbound Pomona Freeway. A portion of Brea Canyon Road also will be extended.
The project is set for completion in the winter of 2005-2006. The $78-million project has been funded by the State Transportation Improvement Program.
